Alexandra Papadopoulou has graduated from Ionian University of Corfu, Greece where she also completed her graduate studies. She received her Ph.D. in May 2010, with First Class Honours. Her thesis is titled “Maritime Businesses, networks and institutions in merchant shipping of the island of Spetses, 1830-1870. Organization, governance and strategy” and was completed under the supervision of Professor Gelina Harlaftis. She has received a three-year scholarship 2005-2008 in the Ph.D./research programme “Greek Maritime Centres: Eminence and Administration of Maritime Heritage of the Ionian and Aegean Seas” within the “Programme for the Reinforcement of Human Research in Greek Universities”, funded by the European Commission and the Hellenic Government. She has participated as an independent researcher in another two research programmes concerning pre-industrial techniques and municipal archives. From 2012 till 2013, she participated in the research project “The Black Sea and its port cities, 1774-1914. Development, convergence and linkages with the global economy” financed by the Greek Ministry of Education and the European Union. From January 2014 till December 2015, she conducted research on the project "Russian and American grain in the new era of the global economy during the 19th century: transportation systems and information in grain market integration", as a Post Doc researcher with a two-year grant at Luigi Bocconi University in Milan, under the supervision of Professor Andrea Colli.
