Iannis Carras received his doctorate “Trade and Brotherhood: Balkan Merchants in Russia 1700-1774” from the Faculty of Political Sciences of the John Capodistrias University of Athens in 2010-2011. Carras’ BA (MA Oxon) was from the University of Oxford (Lincoln College) and he has an MA in Russian Studies and Transition Economics from the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University (Bologna and Washington DC). He is currently participating in The Black Sea Port-Cities research programme and editing a monograph on the inland port city of Nezhin. He is a lecturer at IES EU Centre, Freiburg, a visiting lecturer at University College Freiburg and visiting lecturer at the International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki. He has also taught Russian and Soviet History at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg. He was selected Instructor of the Year for all IES study abroad programmes in 2016. His most recent articles include "Understanding God and tolerating humankind: Orthodoxy and the Enlightenment in Evgenios Voulgaris and Platon Levshin", in Paschalis M. Kitromilides (ed.), Enlightenment and Religion in the Orthodox World, Voltaire Foundation, Oxford, 2016, pp. 73-139, and "Connecting Migration and Identities: Godparenthood, Surety and Greeks in the Russian Empire (18th - Early 19th Centuries)" in Olga Katsiardi-Hering Maria A. Stassinopoulou (eds.), Across the Danube. Southeastern Europeans and their Travelling Identities (17th-19th c.), Brill, Leiden, 2016, pp. 65-112. He is also writes contributions to the press and has worked as an analyst on issues of contemporary politics.
